The cement sector is one of the most polluting in the world, accounting for around 8% of total worldwide CO2 emissions.

Cement is manufactured by heating limestone and clay at high temperatures, releasing CO2 into the environment. A number of new technologies are being researched to produce less polluting cement.

Geopolymer cement is one potential technology. Waste materials such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, which are leftovers of other industries, are used to make geopolymer cement.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is another promising technique. CCS entails capturing and storing CO2 emissions from cement plants underground.

Carbon Re, a British firm, aims to optimize fuel use through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The company is evaluating the actual fuel usage of a number of producers in order to train its machine-learning algorithm to estimate the best fuel required for a given fuel source and production aim.
