Let’s go with our companions to explore more about the cosmos, as we all know that our universe is so big that we can’t imagine it and that it contains many dark secrets that are yet to be revealed. As of now, we have only a limited vision of the universe. Some of the most chilling questions are about the concept of a parallel universe, the presence of aliens, the multiverse, black holes, wormholes, etc.
But for our universe, even if they are just little pebbles in the way our universe is made up of 95% dark matter, of which we are not sure what it is, how it’s created, and many more secrets. Asteroids and comets are just some rocks from planets that run around the universe for no reason.
What is a comet?
Comets are essentially dust or ice particles that orbit the sun without a specific purpose. They originated from the remnants of planets that were flung away at high speeds during the big bang, ultimately settling into orbits.
NASA has unearthed numerous ancient comets, that have been in motion for billions of years, forming luminous tails due to the sun’s influence.
The high velocity of comets and the sun’s radiation disturbs the cometary dust, giving rise to a tail. Their orbits around the sun typically span 100–200 years. These comets vary in size and shape.
What are Meteors?
Meteors are just the parts of comets or asteroids that orbit around the sun; they generally form because of collisions with comets or from the dust of comets.
They are mostly small in size, and whenever they enter the earth’s surface or any other planet’s surface, the temperature rise exhausts all their gauges and makes them vulnerable to causing any harm to humans or infrastructure.
They are often referred to as shooting stars because they form a bright tail around them, which is caused by the evaporation of gases and high speed. The size of meteors is often 1 or 2 meters or less, or sometimes they reach hundreds of meters, but that is very rare.
What are asteroids?
Asteroids, as we know, are big bulls of the cosmos; they are mostly big parts of rocks, and they are often called half planets because their size is very massive. They can go up to hundreds of miles and weigh up to billions of tons.
The current biggest asteroids are 329 miles in diameter and weigh up to billions of tons. Currently, there are 1.3 million observed asteroids.

T4 Lemmon was recently discovered in 2021; it was a very old comet that orbited around our sun, and we can see it in August 2023. T4 Lemmon was found in the month of October 2021, in the Mount Lemmon Building Telescope.
This Comet was traveling millions or even billions of years ago, and it shows a low appearance in our solar system
Hartley 2 is a small comet orbiting our solar system; it takes almost 6 years and 4 months to complete its orbit fully. It is a minor member of Jupiter’s orbital comets and asteroids; its size is almost 1.6 kilometers long.
The Hartley comet was first observed by Malcolm Hartley in 1986 In Australia on the Schmidt Telescope Unit.
Pons Brook is an ancient comet whose orbital time is around 71 years. Pons Brook is one of the brightest comets to ever be found; its weight is up to thousands of megatons, and its size is estimated to be 30–40 kilometers in diameter.
As far as we know, it is one of the biggest comets. Chinese first saw Comet Pons Brooks in around 1357, but it was actually discovered in 1812 by Jean Louis Pons, and after that, it was seen by many astronomers in the same year.
A2 Pan STARRS.
A2 PanSTARRS is a newly discovered comet, but its age is millions of years old. It was discovered in 2022 by the PanSTARRS Research Authorities with the help of their main telescope, Haleakala.
A2 PanSTARRS was only 240 Million kilometers Away from Earth when it was discovered. It will be visible in November 2023, but due to its small size and large distance, it will not be possible to see it with the naked eye. We have to use an advanced telescope to see it.
The 144P Kushida comet was discovered by Yoshio Kushida on January 8, 1994. Its orbital period is around 7 years, and it’s also one of the heaviest comets ever found.
It will be visible in November 2023, but it will be millions of kilometers away, so we can’t see it with our naked eye; we need a higher telescope to see it.
Friends, as we know, our universe is so big that it’s almost impossible for us to travel even 1% of it for now, but in the future, humankind will be able to travel millions and billions of miles into the universe. Currently, we do not have enough technology and resources; it takes very high amounts of fuel to even travel to our nearest planets and moons, and they are just like small pebbles on a mountain that is our universe.
Comets and meteors are just small dust and ice particles that orbit around our sun for no reason and slowly lose their mass and disappear. On the other hand, an asteroid is a big rocky and iron piece that can weigh up to millions of megatons and have a massive size that can go up to hundreds and even thousands of kilometers. The asteroids that made the dinosaurs extinct are just a small baby in front of them. This cosmos is way more deep and scary than we know, so let’s explore it together.
